Well that is not the case for me, or for many many others.

How do you know what the connections are (2.4 or 5GHz) and the security in public wifi areas?

Is there a guide you can point me to?

In public wifi areas there is not security enabled to access.

About 2.4 or 5GHz connections, I have configured router at home with both connections and then I can do tests, and both are working fine.

On different friends house, I can connect without problems. All of them have 2.4GHz connections with WEP or WPA2 security.

Majority of houses have 2.4 GHz connections

I purchased an Umi Hammer S about a week ago in the U.K and then travelled to Spain for a holiday. Whilst in the U.K I used my home Wifi (strong signal) to connect to the internet without a problem. When I got to Spain I found that the Wifi in the hotel (poor signal) kept dropping out and I couldn't use a data connection either. However I have just discovered that if I have my mini-speakers or headphone plugged in it helps a bit and stays connected for longer...the data connection also works. So is this problem with the phones antenna?

Is strange because, in the U.K, you don't need to use headphones to be connected to wifi right?

A I know, there isn't any relation between wifi antenna and headphones

The WiFi antenna is shortcut to the ground on the PCB of the phone. Since the wire of the headphones (also contain a ground line) extends the surface of the grounded board, that can strengthen the reception a little bit. In that hotel, they've probably installed a minimal system to cover the area with a wireless network.

the wifi issue comes out when connected in WEP mode
change the setting of your wifi router to WPA-PSK
the wifi connection will run fine
remember that the WEP connection is obsolete

UMI appear not to support any phone, just bring out new ones!

Anyway, to add to this debate. I have had this phone for 6 months. WiFi is quite bad and drops out many, many times.
Whilst at my sons house, it was the SAME bad, drop out connection....BUT, he had 2 separate connections, the 2ghz and 5ghz. I expected the 2ghz to be the best, it was not.
I switched to the 5ghz connection and it was reliable!!!! So, it "appears" that it is the 2ghz side of the phone that is broken!!
