All,
Any tips to improve the pics taken with the UMI Iron?
When zooming in you can immediately tell how bad the quality is, even if they are taken outdoors with great light. Any settings or different software that you tried and improved the situation? Tried Google camera but no luck.
I bought the device thinking that the Sony H/W will do a good job but apparently the software is not really supporting it.

Thanks for any help.

I've got some serious problems with the camera too...
The autofocus si not working at all, all the photos are out of focus and using the Camera FV-5 it even say that it can't take picture because the Autofocus doesn't work...
On the other hand the flash is not well synchronised neither... You see the flash light and after like a second t takes the picture...
I was really happy with this phone but i bought it thinking i'm buying a nice sony sensor cam, but i see that again Umi lies about a device (had a hammer with false battery...) and it is the last time i buy  or recommand a Umi phone!!

Yes it's not a good cam software but for the price it does the job considering I don't buy a phone for the camera. For now UMI are not so good in this domain but I think they will do a better job, we will see with the Zero 2 camera.
It's rare to find a smartphone less than 200 euros with a good quality camera and zoom.

I use four photo app now. Stock camera, Google Camera, A Better Camera, Camera FV-5. I prefer Camera FV-5, but A Better Camera's DRO function is great. Also seems like this has the best HDR. A little slow, but the result is the best of these apps.
Sadly I'm really busy now to make an in depth comparison and to find out the best settings, but I'll do it next week.

Sony IMX214 supports 4k video,  ...

4K video recording needs support from the processor too and the MT6753 SoC built in UMI Iron supports only max 1080p@30fps video recording. Iron Adds don't speak about 4K video recording so that's a question where is the lie in your opinion.

Hello papadopulos.ge,
I found a substantial improvement by setting the IS0 to no more than 100 or 200, and the sensor 13 megapixel (it is useless to set 20 mpx)
Let us know if it improves
Cheers

Hi wanagain79, I disagree that Umi has not good results with your camera devices; Umi Zero for example has a really excellent camera that takes spectaculars pictures and videos.

Comments

Okay thanks for your comment, I have seen that the camera is not as good as expected but I really don't have it so as you own a Zero you have a more credible view.  Post time 2015-9-3 21:09

How do you set as default settings in camera 100-200 iso?

Go to camera app -> settings -> photo tab -> ISO
But maybe you are better go for eg Camera FV-5.

Another finding about the camera is that the sharpening on default is really high and it makes the noise more visible. You can change it in Camera -> Settings -> Picture properties. (sadly the app doesn't save this setting, I have to change it every time.)
Just try it.  You will see the difference.

Another thing. It seems like the  camera tend to underexpose the pictures.  And also seems like on auto mode it doesn't use larger ISO than ~350.
I've shot some picture in a completely dark room with flash and the result picture was underexposed and shot at ISO ~320. I tried it with a Redmi 1s and it's picture is much brighter and shot with ISO ~1150.

Thank you all. Indeed limiting the ISO and also the sharpening reduction is improving the situation.
Has anyone tried different camera apps that provide good results?

BTW, I do not feel I should give up trying to get good pics out of my IRON. I decided to go with that phone due to the IMX214 sensor it has and since the same sensor is used by other phones with excellent results, I will keep on trying to find a different/better app or different settings to take advantage of it's full potential. Pushing UMI for better support should be done in parallel as well!
