I've been using this phone for a while now and here's my opinion. The device is good. It has lots of RAM and storage capacity and the CPU is very fast. Wifi range is poor, but if we're in the range we'll have no troubles. Camera is nice. It's not great, but it's the first time that I have a decent camera on a phone. So, at this point, I would definitely recommend the phone to a friend.
But then comes UMI OS and that's a whole different story. It has bugs (for instance, Captive Portal keeps crashing), it has compatibility issues (for instance, I can't get AIDA 64 working). It has lots of bloatware that we can't even disable. We have to configure the OS in order to get basic apps working (contacts, email, calendar). We can't change the default launcher, so good luck on customizing the looks of the phone. And last, but not least, we can't root it, so we have to stick with it. I hope I'm wrong, but at this point, I'm convinced that, if Umidigi doesn't change anything, there will be no root available in the future.
So, what could be a very good phone for the money has its image seriously damaged because of the ROM installed. I'll wait for a while and see if Umidigi's developers come to their senses and release a decent ROM (ideally, a stock Android 8.0 ROM). Otherwise, I'll probably end up losing my patience (and my money) and move on to another brand. |
