I can't understand. You said that we won't get the ota/FOTA but UMI said they are working on releasing it so we just have to wait till the update hits our phones by notification. I am quiet confused

You're not the only one. All other brands are able to push an update for a newer android version straight to the phone. UMI isn't as it seems.
It is confusing.
The other way of updating is not really consumer friendly. They loose all data and have to reinstall everything again.
This is not how it should be done and is only for the experienced computer users.
That said I am still awaiting the wireless update to Android 7. The size is not relevant when downloading by wifi, even if it is 1.2gb.

In order to be able to upgrade your UMi Plus to Android 7.0 via FOTA method (Wireless update), you have to have this latest Android 6.0 version installed on your device.
