I think it's not possible. Maybe with a future update, as I have read.

By modding systemui.apk it could be done I just thought it didn't worth the time, so I didn't experiment with it

If you are rooted and run xposed framework and run the module flat style bar indicators you can customise your status bar to your liking without the big 4g/3g icon. You can change the look and even colors if you so wish.

Simple! Rooted your phone, open the file build.prop, located in /system/build.prop and edit the line:

ro.mtk_cta_set=1 - change a value from 1 -> 0
Save and reboot the phone.

Tested on Umi Super - Android 7.0
