Where are you seeing the new OTA?

I'm sorry, there isn't actually a new OTA per se. What I meant was that UMIDIGI has released the SPFT image for the OTA from 01/30 on this forum (I guess the one they had previously given us was the factory image). I actually had installed the OTA before I tried to root my phone but installing the original SPFT image removed it.

I believe it is also worth noting that the pm bug I mentioned earlier (where root apps can't auto-install) appears to actually be a bug (or technically a security feature?) with Android 9 and not our ROM, as it also happens on my MIUI 10 and Android One devices.

I still stand by the statement that this ROM is stupid and buggy. I don't know why Magisk v18.0+ is failing to root but it's definitely not normal for it to do so, and the boot image patching is working correctly. Additionally, I am having issues with some apps failing to initialize correctly at boot and all kinds of other bugginess. I do typically have problems like this with MIUI, but disabling MIUI Optimization in developer settings fixes it. Obviously there is no such option here, so I'm stuck with a bunch of broken garbage.

have you tried flashing the entier rom over

Yeah, that was one of the things I had to do to get my phone rooted. There isn't a question as to weather the ROM is buggy. Early initialization apps that are supposed to start at boot do not work correctly and I was also unable to get a program called scrcpy working. I'm not sure what it is, but something is not right about this version of Android.

EDIT: Through a little more experimentation, I was able to fix the problems. It appears that the system does prevent certain apps from running at boot under certain conditions, but adding the application in question to the list of not optimized apps for battery saving seems to aleviate the issue, for the most part. I was also able to get scrcpy going. Apparently the device's hardware encoder is not fast enough to process it's full screen resolution, so running it at 720p with -m1558 (for this device) works fine. The encoder can output 1080p, but only at 16:9, so if you don't want the scaling, you can also get it working by cropping your device's display using a command line like this: -c1080:1920:0:0
Now that I've got all my little gripes worked out, I think I'll be reasonably happy with this phone, but it certainly still concerns me that we can't get Magisk v18.0+ working.

Ok Good!!!

I like this one. It looks like it has some bugs fixed and gives me access to a lot more partitions. I like it, thanks. I've included screenshots of the important screens, but not the ones that show my filesystem, sorry. Still no USB though. I love using adb in recovery so this is a bit disappointing.

Also, unrelated to recovery, but I have worked out a way to safely upgrade the phone to newer software using SPFT without losing your unencrypted data, files, or root. I will post a guide if someone wants me to, but I will warn you that it's dangerous so make sure you back up your stuff first!

So, as someone who's not rooted before (but it now appears can...)

a) What are the major benefits of doing so? Will I be able to get Google Camera for example?
b) Can you compile a step by step guide?

thanks!

So, as someone who's not rooted before (but it now appears can...)

a) What are the major benefits o ...

a) You can install custom system software and alter certain core components. You can do things like ad blocking on a system level, so you don't have an app running to drain your battery while doing it. You can add the Camera2 API if the phone doesn't already have it, which does allow you to use Gcam. I'll try to get this going and let you know about it. I am also a fan of Titanium Backup, which can help you backup and restore data on specific individual apps, so you can forget about manually transferring over your settings. It can also disable some of the annoying MediaTek bloatware that has a greyed out disable button in Settings  (though I believe this can be achieved through adb). Also, most things that require you to use adb to give them permission can be done automatically if you're rooted. You can get fully automated updates for F-Droid, a cool open source only app store that also supports custom repositories. DAC enhancements like ViperFX4Android can let you fine tune the audio coming out of your headphone jack. If you don't mind breaking SafetyNet and most banking apps and lots of games, you can install Xposed Framework and customize everything on your phone. Theorhetically, you should be able to get custom themes for all of your favorite apps with Substratum, but I tried that earlier and it didn't work (I think it requires Magisk 18+). Or you can forget about all of that and install some extreme power saving enhancements to make your phone performant when your using it, and power sipping when you're not. This thing might last a week with the right power saving tricks and that huge battery... ;)

Woah, that's a lot.... And I probably couldn't really cover everything anyway.
b) Yeah I guess I can do that.

Thanks for the response!

Slight unrelated but I've just noticed when making a call that the proximity sensor doesnt seem to be shutting off the screen...

I went into the calibration in settings but it's not making a lot of sense (initially it failed until reboot)
Is the calibration screen supposed to indicate when the thing is activated? Or is it dumb?

rooting with magisk you need to patch the boot file with magisk an then flash the boot file with s ...

That won't work on this phone since Magisk Manager will only use the latest version.
