Tried all these and different combinations. Apps still randomly stop when in background. I suspect ...

It is not a fault from Android, but Umidigi. I donot see any reason why UmiOS is restricting only to use ~1.7GB of RAM when it has 6G of RAM.

The latest update seems to have fixed the option: settings> Permission Management> screen-off cleaning whitelist
Apps checked on the list now do not close in background.. making everything much better

Yes, you are right. I find the following apps getting cleaned when on whitelist:

Gmail 100% of time
Facebook 50%
Whatsapp 75%
Most others that I use are ok.

'Screen off whitelist apps' doesnot help much. I tried putting all apps to be run after lock, stil ...

But multitasking should be use only when you using phone /any other device, not when is going to sleep mode. If you play any heavy game etc you will fill full or nearly full RAM, but (exactly as you mentioned) after going to sleep mode system is switching off some unwanted (heavy) tasks to save battery etc.

We spoke to engineers about your complaints and they will check what they can do but they still need put balance between everything, otherwise in next time users will complain about battery consumption or overheating etc

Yes you are right in that. But what i am saying is that the OS should honor the settings set by the user.
I donot even play games. I am talking about the ram usage of not more than say 3G. The OS 'cleans' the background apps if it finds the usage starts to increase.

I fully understand your explanation but you can fill nearly full RAM if you start heavy app (of course games and benchmark are most  heavy apps ).
About other case with background apps developers are informed and they will try rich users expectation.
