The problem is that the phone itself is unable to format the SD cards, it always ends the activation process abruptly and says that "SD card damaged" thing.

The SanDisk card, for instance, has been formatted on the PC twice during my tests.

I'll try again tomorrow and report, but my hopes aren't high.

I've managed to install RootJoy on a fresh WinXP virtual machine.

Then I've flashed official rom 1.0.6 and Flyme too. I've also formatted the SanDisk 32GB card with FAT16, FAT32 and EXT4 filesystems.

In all scenarios the result is the same: bootloop when powering the phone with the SD inserted; "SD card damaged" when inserting the card with the phone booted up.

It's clear that this is a hardware related problem. I'm going to ask the reseller to send another phone. And given the experience, better if isn't an Umi.

Hello Drakhart, the problem treated on this thread is general. I do not think it's a good statement declaring "never produced umi". I understand your disappointment, but these are things that happen also with other devices more expensive and more famous than Umi. Being a hardware problem, the guarantee will be entitled to require the replacement of the phone with a new one. To draw a parallel, if you buy her bread, and noticing that you are rotten, you say: "I will never eat bread"? Let the joke, but I think that neither your seller, let alone Umi may have an interest in providing a disservice to their users. Unless you have not had previous experience with similar products Umi. I can tell you that I am a happy owner of Umi Zero, eMax and Iron; I have been lucky but I've never had problems with any of the three, in fact, I can not say what is the best! (indeed, I know, but I will not tell).
Cheers

Following your joke, unlucky people wouldn't buy cars as there'd be death risk involved. I don't think buying anything from anywhere should be a matter of being (un)lucky: it's a matter of quality control and, given the amount of reports with Umi Iron's SD/SIM card slot on this and other forums, it's clear that this phone hasn't been tested properly.

Anyway let's not get this off topic, please. I've already contacted the reseller and asked for a replacement and I hope to get it soon. Let's give Umi a second and last chance.

EDIT: I won't even bother answering to you, Umidaze, as I've said this part is getting off-topic and quite absurd. And it's even more commenting on it days later.

Comments

I suggest you check your facts before making a comment. There are many 1000s of cars from all brands that have to be recalled every year. As ladrodibestiame says; A small percentage sometimes fails.  Post time 2015-9-10 10:55

Yeah. Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe I hope all of these hours of tests with the SD card slot not working and causing the phone to bootloop are of any help to Blandroid and anyone else entering this "Problems with extSD card and Rebooting" thread while I'm leaving it for sure. Let moderators decide.

Answering bencebacsi: I use an original one, not cropped. It's the kind of SIM that includes all three sizes each one inside the other, with factory precision cuts.

Anyway I think that my problem with the SIM/SD tray is unrelated to this, as the two slots work perfectly with the same SIM and the first thing I tried is to put the SD card alone (no SIM).

So the phone isn't recognizing the SD from the very beginning, even before I put a SIM in it.

I'm sorry, but I disagree with your intervention, Drakhart. Honestly I did not speak of luck or bad luck. I simply considered that here are people who try to help to solve problems on the basis of personal experiences related to the use of the same product. This is to improve the experience in the use and a better knowledge regarding the problems that may arise. I understand the frustration of those who have purchased a product and soon finds herself having to solve problems. The fact to lighten the discussion with a few words used to play down the context, why shoot Umi Company against an easily solvable problem, raised by those who have the phone for a few days, it seems right. Here are people who use Umi devices for some time, I am one of those, as I mentioned, and here I always find people willing to help out and to whom in my turn I have gladly given my contribution. If there are 3 or 4 members with your own, or with other problems, there are others in 1000 that your problem does not have it. Umi is a small company, but I can guarantee that in terms of seriousness and ability is second to none. The phone has been tested properly, so much so that they have been postponed the release to allow this. Free to buy other brands.

I've tried flashing the ported TWRP found on these forums, both with Flashify and Rashr, and whenever I try to boot into recovery with the SD card inserted I get the very same black screen bootloop that I get when trying a normal boot.

I can boot into recovery and access its file manager without an SD card inserted, but this way I can't see the SD card mounted. Obviously. =)

Well, I don't know what have I done, but I don't seem able to flash TWRP anymore. Both Flashify and Rashr report the recovery had been flashed successfully, but when I reboot... Tada! There is RootJoy, not wanting to leave.

I've tried flashing with fastboot too, but it says something like "external permission denied". When trying only boot without flash it says "unknown command" after downloading the img to the phone. I guess it's something related to the bootloader being protected.

Do you know any other methods for flashing this recovery?
EDIT: At last I've managed to flash it. If I go into TWRP, then insert the card, and then try to mount it, the Micro SD option highlights in blue for a second and then turns white again. I can't leave the box checked, so no avail
