The GPS is not fine and the problem is not with Google Maps. The Umi Super has very low signal from GPS compared to a very cheap cellphone I have. The cheap phone shows my position on Google Maps exactly while the Umi shows my position wandering and jumping all over the place. I have not seen this behavior on any other Android phone and I have had a lot of them :-) I initially put it down to the weak signal but if I move the cheap phone inside, the signal gets weaker but it still maintains a steady position, what happens on Google Maps is that the accuracy decreases, ie the blue circle gets bigger. So this wandering behavior is very odd.
Generally, navigation apps like Here, Waze, Google Maps etc will try to keep the position locked to roads and will to a certain extent ignore spurious positions so some people may not have a problem if they are getting a slightly stronger signal than others. However, if you are interested in knowing your static location for things like Pokemon or Geocaching then the Super in my experience is not usable. |
