What is frameless smartphone and what Pros and Cons it has

After the announcement of UMIDIGI Crystal, the frameless smartphone, also known as all-screen or bezel-less phones, has caught a deal of attention of the consumers as well as manufacturers. So have you wonder a serious as such: what frameless smartphone is really about, and what pros and cons it may have? Today we will go into the topic in depth.

A frameless smartphone is seemingly the front face of the phone is almost covered by a whole piece of screen, the screen has a much higher proportion of the device’s front face. Phones like Xiaomi Mix, Samsung S8, UMIDIGI Crystal are in the frameless phone category, which means the four sides of the front frame are made with super narrow-band. Generally speaking, a frameless phone is equivalent to an ultra narrow-band frame design phone on the front face, and thus it has a much higher screen proportion than regular phones.

What’s the benefit of a frameless phone?
The benefit of a frameless phone is quite noticeable, first of all, it looks stunningly beautiful; secondly, it can reduce the size of the phone but insert a bigger screen within the same size of the mold. In short, frameless phone brings extraordinary visual experience while enhancing the ID design.

What “disadvantages” a frameless phone may have?
Since the screen proportion on a frameless phone has been enlarged to its limit, it brings quite a few technical difficulties on replacing the earpiece, front camera and the P-sensor from where they used to be or to make them smaller in order to save more space for the screen. Manufacturers like Xiaomi and UMIDIGI chose to go with another way to solve this issue. Xiaomi Mix uses cantilever piezoelectric ceramic acoustic technology with a full-ceramic body for audio transmission. UMIDIGI, on the other hand, chose to apply structural innovation by introducing the Box audio cavity design to allows a very thin earpiece “line” on the forehead and replacing the L-sensor to the top-end of the phone. In order to make room for the screen, the touch ID has to be placed on the back of the phone, in which way some users may find not as convenient as those on the front, it is a compromise move. But there are other manufacturers looking for some other ways such as front Face ID or Iris recognition as alternatives. By doing so, users may no longer reply on the touch ID in the future.

Conclusion
To sum it up, the benefits of frameless phones obviously override the disadvantages, and that’s why the frameless feature is becoming more popular. The history of smartphone screen has come from LCD screen, OLED screen, Curved screen, and now the astonishing frameless screen. The beauty of the smartphone keeps on evolving. As the demand increases and the upstream technology develops, the frameless smartphone will soon be the major focus of smartphone manufacturers.

Thats not smart, or is it ? off course if people break their new phone days after they got it, they will go buy a new one, so maybe it is smart.

But in the great scheme of things i don't thing its smart, but it is trendy so people buy it, making it a trendy fashion phone and not a smart phone.

I like the Jelly.

The only good thing i can see about a frameless design are that you can make a smaller phone with a given screen size.
I am doubtful if this design will allow for the phones to maintain stiffness and not be prone to bending in the jeans pockets where some people carry their phone.
But i guess bending "tests" on youtube will reveal this if it are a issue.

I can not get myself to use the word beautiful about any phone, that word i would save to describe the soul of a good person, a landscape, maybe a good looking vintage car ( no new cars are beautiful ), the taste of a good meal, and so on.

But a phone being beautiful ???? that's just some BS the fruit company have come up with to sell their phones.

The phone are a tool that can do a few good things for you, and do even more bad things for you if you are not careful with the use of it.

I would rather be a beautiful person based on the things i say and do, than by the phone i carry.
And if people label me on silly things like the clothe i wear / the shoes on my feet or the phone i have, then i am sorry but then i cant have anything to do with those people.

Ps. this is where i mention that in 50 years of living i have only found one friend, and a girlfriend,,,, well that's still a dream for me.

You are right. Phone is a tool which has to look just decent, no more no less. Moreover, it is a tool like you've said which need to be practical, functional, sturdy and reliable on a long term.  Post time 2017-5-9 16:07

Edited by Baki at 2017-5-9 16:14 \n\nEdited by Baki at 2017-5-9 16:14 \n\nLet us put aside the aesthetics, which is unavoidable, but the real bottom line of a frameless design should be to increase the screen to body ration in order to make it more practical to hold and operate with one hand, to the maximum possible degree.

Good point! Do you think 6.4inch would be good for the frameless phone?

Comments

6.0 inch would be a more interesting option to be considered. Frameless design is probably less sturdy and more prone to dropping.  Post time 2017-5-10 14:31

You need to tell me the overall dimensions of the 6.4inch phone. If it would be bigger than UMI Z - you are entering a completely new field with unpredictable end result IMHO.
For my liking: UMI Z which I am using is already at the edge regarding the size and weight.

Law of physics does not allow a good compromise between "phablet" (let's say UMI Z) and 8 inch tablet.
I wouldn't use any tablet smaller than that.
Overly usage of the phone for watching the videos ruin the eyesight on the long run. That's for sure.

I have broken the back Gorilla glass 4 of my new Galaxy A7 2016 after the first three hours of usage. It was so slippy without the silicon back cover. Glass is hopeless.  Post time 2017-5-10 14:19
