What’s the best Umi phone you can buy today?
Today we are going to pit Umi’s flagship range of phones against each other and see who comes out on top. We’ll take a look at Battery Life, Features, Camera, Connectivity and Design pointing out any weak areas of the phones along the way.
It might be a little controversial and un-liked by Umi but I’m going to say it anyway, if a phone isn’t full HD then it isn’t making it into the ‘best Umi phone you can buy’ list. Full HD (1920×1080) mobile screens have been readily available in phones for years. Quad HD is the future Full HD is the standard, the end. So any Umi phones that are still packing last years screen technology, asta la vista baby!
Which Umi phones to avoid
Umi phones that got culled at the first hurdle for having low resolution screens are (please read in your best game show voice): The Umi Hammer S, The Umi Rome & The Umi Fair. If you were thinking about getting on these phones then think again, but don’t worry Umi currently have 4 more options that all feature full HD screens, meaning you don’t have to settle for last years tech re-skinned.
Round 1: Umi Iron Vs Umi Iron Pro
Lets see what the differences between the Umi Iron Pro and the Umi Iron are. From the outside they look almost identical and have the same physical dimensions and weight. The only physical difference is that the Pro features a slightly different back fascia. So lets take a look at what puts the ‘Pro’ into Umi’s Iron phone. Below I’ve compiled the benefits for each model.

Umi Iron Pro benefits?
  • Finger Print Sensor
  • USB Type-C
  • EPO GPS*
  • Full metal back

Umi Iron benefits?
  • On-the-go charging OTG
  • Slightly larger battery.
*Kimovil actually benchmarked the Umi Iron with Antutu at over 2000 points higher the pro, in their specifications list for the Umi Iron they have the CPU down as a MediaTek MTK6753 revision 1.3, this later revision might explain the difference although I’ve yet to confirm this myself with test samples.
There really isn’t a lot of difference between the Iron and the Iron Pro. In fact I’m not even sure why they called it a Pro, its more like an Umi Iron Plus. ‘Pro’ to me suggests that it is going to feature better internals not just slap a finger print reader on it.
I digress, due to the added finger print sensor and the addition of a USB-C port I’m still going to declare Umi Iron Pro the winner.
Round 2: Umi eMax Vs Umi eMax Mini
The eMax range features the eMax and the more recently released Emax Mini which Umi claims is their flagship phone. The eMax mini isn’t really a ‘Mini’ and more like a completely new phone. I think the marketing department inside Umi new to think a little more about their product range names. The Mini does sport a 5″ screen compared the eMax’s 5.5″ but that’s where most of the similarities end. I’ve compiled a list of the benefits for each below.

eMax benefits?
  • Thinner by 1mm (7.9mm)
  • Much larger battery
  • MTK6752 slighter better

eMax Mini benefits?
  • Higher PPI of 441
  • 18g lighter
  • Sony f2.2 Rear Camera
  • 8MP Selfie Cam
  • GLONASS GPS
  • Snapdragon 615 runs cooler
Deciding between these two isn’t as easy as you might think as each have their own unique perks. Having said that the superior camera quality, higher PPI & cooler CPU inside the eMax Mini are just giving it the edge. Its down to personal preference here on whether you want the extra screen real estate and longer battery life. Even with this in mind the Winner is the eMax Mini.
Final Round (Finish Him): Umi Iron Pro Vs Umi eMax Mini
In the final round we’re taking the two winners from previous rounds. Who will be theKing of Umi phones?

Umi Iron Pro benefits?
  • 1GB More RAM
  • Thinner by 1mm (7.9mm)
  • Metal Alloy Body
  • Dual Camera Flash
  • Improved Camera F-stop
  • Double the expandable storage
  • USB Type-C
  • Finger Print Sensor

eMax Mini benefits?
  • Better Processor
  • Better Graphics
  • Snapdragon 615 runs cooler
  • Higher PPI
  • OTG Quick Charge
And the winner is… The Umi Iron Pro
Neither of these phones are good choices for high-end gaming as the CPU/GPUs just aren’t up to the task. bearing this in mind they will still be able to play non-graphically intense games such as Farmville, CandyCrush, Angry Birds and Clash of Clans with ease. If you want a gaming phone it might be best to look at other brands or go with the Umi eMax as this has a more powerful GPU and CPU, Specs below.
Once we have taken out the Gaming aspect, the Umi Iron Pro starts to look like a really good choice. It out performs the eMax Mini in all areas except PPI. The low-mid range MTK6753 found in the Umi Iron Pro will handle multitasking with ease giving you a fast and responsive experience on the your chosen OS. Add to this that the Umi Iron Pro is a much nicer and refined looking device than the eMax Mini there really aren’t any reason to go for the Mini.
The future proofing aspects of the Umi Iron Pro are all nice touches as well. You won’t need to sit with envy whilst all your friends are using finger print ID and no more fiddling in the dark to get your charger in the right way, USB-C works both ways.

Edited by DANIBOY77 at 2015-11-30 20:12 \n\nThe Emax with Android 4.4, 5.0, 5.1 ? ? ?  WHERE !!!
It is that Android 4.4 KitKat only on the Emax , not 5.0 or 5.1 !
lie !
This is not really a good choice especially as the products are cheap, good and great quality...

Careful what you stipulate in specification !
