I recently bought an Umi emax from Amazon. The phone was easy to set up and configure to my requirements.
However, I find that taking photos with it is impossible, the images are "grainy" and I need to set ISO to 100 to minimise it.
I think the problem is due to the software oversharpening the image. Focussing is also a bit hit or miss. I am using Open Camera as the stock camera was impossible to use.
Does anyone know of a fix for this problem? Are Umi going to modify the software to improve the camera?

There was a long discussion about this problem.

The camera app/driver probably won't be improved by UMI. I recommend you to use the A Better Camera app. That's a little bit slow but produces much better results.

Thanks for the link. It more or less confirms my feeling that the camera is best used at ISO 100 with another camera app rather than the stock camera app.I intend to try some pics at the 8Mp setting.
I have tried using the Better Camera app but it does not do any better than the Open Camera app at least at 13Mp setting.

In a way this is disappointing as the higher ISO speeds would be very useful in low light or sports situations to get a higher shutter speed to minimise blur caused by movement.

yes a little better at ISO 100 , but no huge difference ...
the camera of this device is not really good, 8 megapixel on my old asus zenphone 5:  it's much better Is it software or hardware or both I do not know , but better 8 megapixel effective as grain in photos

Edit: I spent the afternoon to test the device with various photo applications, settings isos , saturation, contrast etc. The best I have is made with cameringo lte.
but is just "correct".

yes ...

I have now taken some typical photos the sort anyone would take when out and about. The first one is using the Umi
the second one is from my old San Deigo
and the last one is using my Sony Nex fitted with a 40 year old Tamron Adaptall 28mm f2.5 manual lens.
Settings were 8Mp  100 ISO, Daylight, Autoscene using Open Camera for the mobiles and 200 ISO  8Mp on the Sony
The Sony pic was badly overexposed as an aperture of f2.5 on a sunny day will do this. It was edited a bit to tone it down.
It is clear the Umi camera is not focussing properly and it also slightly overexposes

Yes... poor or bad camera, or bad software driver
There should be means of improving working on the software, but it surely will not be...
