Never broke any of my phones when dropping them but the 99% of the time when I do drop (unfortunately, it is mostly on the escalator steps) is in the transition of taking it out of my front jeans' pocket to almost getting it into the 'hold it up to unlock and read' phase.

I put my smartphone on top of cabinet thinking my cat can not reach it. What a mistake. I have athletic cat Jerry, it jump over 1.80 meters high on top of cabinet and push it with her paw on the floor. Bye bye phone, amazing what a cats can do.
