The SPFT release contains the same content as the OTA release of the same version (only updated contents in the OTA file) but unlike an OTA update, flashing with SPFT does not perform an installation, just simply overwrites some specific parts of the flash ROM with new data, while it keeps other parts untouched. Moreover, all versions without OTA releases are unofficial versions, therefore for UMi Super the V3.02_20161017 version is the latest official version currently. Overall, flashing with SPFT is a useful but not official method to update your device, that may cause unwanted issues. You can read the warnings in every ROM post.

So if anything doing the spft is not as good as doing the fota, and instead of advising a spft to fix issues it would be better to spft a previous ROM and then fota back to the current ROM?

That depends on whether an issue means a damaged software or programmed bugs. OTA updates are for fixing bugs and spft is for repairing damaged software.

Sorry, but it won't be released. MediaTek has not issued a Nougat SDK for the MT6753 SoC.

well that was as clear as mud,
in my simple way I have assumed anything that more completely overwrites something that is malfunctioning is almost always better than something which is only partially overwritten, all other things being equal of course?

Exactly, I got mine with this version and I had to flash 20160819 myself in order to receive FOTA updates.
