No, thats wrong. In V1.0_20180830 I can open the EngineerMode. I love this tool - please bring it back to your firmware and my phone!

What happens if Ido the manual OTA update while running 20180830?

It's a full ROM OTA update, so it might work but not guaranteed. Since you flashed the 0830 version with spft, that would be simpler to just use that tool again.

I also had issues getting to the English menu, here is how I did it, works 99% of the time. Once your phone is powered off, press power button and volume UP simultaneously (and keep both pressed) UNTIL the screen shows UMIDIGI thing, then immediately let go ONLY of the power button, but KEEP pressing the volume UP until you get the dead android screen. Then release all, pres power button first, and while keeping it pressed, press once on volume up. That takes me to the English menu, and there are steps around here what to do there to do a factory reset. Hope this helps, took some time for me to get it right aswell

You can flash it with the flash tool or install the ota update from recovery. See the provided instructions.

I know from my Elephone P9000 I had the same problem, installing the drivers for MTK is somehow difficult.
I had some trouble doing this to this time (had forgotten the sequens).
I've you follow the explanation in the link, I think it should work.
You have to use a Keyboard with cable (wireless is not recognised), hope it helps.
