So, by now we've reported 4 phones with the same issue and sold by 4 different resellers. It seems to be a factory problem, rather than different resellers doing the same test that would spoil the card slots. Being both possible, the simplest of two answers is usually the right one.

I'm happy for you, Blandroid. I too hope to get a replacement soon, as I must admit that regardless of this SD card issue the Umi Iron feels solid and responsive, and it's design is one of the best even among known brand flagships. I've already come to love and it's only been two days.

I've got everything crossed for us both Drakhart ;)  Like you, I fell madly in love with this phone after a mere 2 days even though it frustrated the hell out of me that I couldn't get it to 100% working order.

Whatever this design issue is (because that's what I believe it to be) it's clearly not affecting all of the phones.  When you consider that only a tiny minority of people who buy phones also use forums, you can see that this issue isn't widespread and that's why I've decided to give Umi another chance.

Mine was shipped yesterday by Coolicool so I reckon I should have it in about a week........I'll keep you posted and please do the same - I'd like to know when yours finally gets to you too

Yes, I too have the feeling that the tray itself spoils the pins when pushing it into the slot. But, you know, I don't think anyone would be happy to void the warranty just to see what's happening in there and not knowing if it can be easily repaired at home.

If pins are deformed they can get broken fairly easy trying to mend them, and then one would need spare pins, solderer, and lots of patience. Worst case scenario would mean changing the whole sim tray/jacket, and this combo is a very special one.

Certainly I'm not willing to try it. Let's see if some brave geek is willing to...

bencebacsi, given your suspicions based on past experiences, can you please offer any advice re how to best insert the sim tray in order to minimise or eradicate the possibility of damage?

If I did something wrong (I'm sure I only pushed it in normally, but you never know - it's possible) I'd like to avoid doing it again with my replacement phone.

Thanks

My point was not to request home mending from non-skilled users.

Of course, I wasn't implying that. It's just that, in this case, I'm willing to. I'm curious by nature and quite handy at fixing electronics, having repaired lots of notebooks and some phones for instance (never a sim tray, I must admit that).

Should I have explicit and official permission from Umi (so I don't lose the warranty) I could open it to take a look and some photos, and even try to fix it if it's feasible after getting your opinion. But I don't think I can get that kind of permission, so... bummer, I'll have to keep my curiosity locked in a drawer.

I'm friends with ITX Tutor from China Devices as I've already said.

He did a teardown of this phone for a video so if he still has it (he does giveaways with the phones he reviews after he's finished with them) I'll ask him to check out the sim tray contacts.

You have formatted the card before putting the phone? I put the card of 8GB another phone (not formatted) reported a damaged card. After formatting is also reported damaged cards. I took the card of 16GB. then the phone was unable to get a system, constantly restart the phone.

I have tried every permutation possible - including running different versions of f/w (V1.5 & V1.6) using different cards (which all worked perfectly well in different devices) and formatting to FAT32

Nothing worked - that phone was a dud!
