nothing stays nailed on waiting for device after the command fastboot flashing unlock and even press ...

When things got screwed up with my various attempts to unencrypt/root, I used SP Flash Tool to flash Recovery, Boot, System, Vendor partitions from stock firmware:

Then started again fresh. Might be worth trying.

ROOT SUCCESS !

Here comes the BIG BUT!
17.3 is depreciated so it won't work with most modules but this should be reported to topJohnwu

Hoping this fixes things for me. Right now I'm tearing my hair out because my phone just gets bricked instantly whenever I try applying the force encrypt patch. I had it working at some point, but must have borked my phone somehow. I wonder if somehow it's not booting because my bootloader is relocked? It still says it's unlocked, shows the warning, and boots into TWRP without issue, but whenever I have a patched boot image it's just bricked.

fastboot does not work for me, until the reboot with adb is ok but then it always tells me about the ...

If you are on Linux or Mac machine, try running fastboot with sudo. On Windows maybe run it with Administrator Command Prompt?

This is all sounding exciting! Ive never rooted a phone before, but I'm desperate to get Google Camera... guessing this is a step in the right direction!
Thanks for the great work

Alright, I successfully managed to get the F1 rooted. @Androidy's method worked great, but I did have to reinstall the update from SPFT first. I also made some attempts to get Magisk upgraded to 18.1 without losing root but it didn't work. Also, apps that use root permissions to install apps seem to not be working. This itself isn't that unusual because optimizations can interfere with things, but it's definitely not good if we don't have a way to turn it off and restore the normal functionality. This is a very frustrating and buggy ROM they stuck us with. Not only does it not behave like stock Android, but there's clearly something wrong with it. There is a new OTA available, so perhaps I'll give that a shot later.
