Hi
I am thinking of trying the Beta 7 update via the flash software, my question will it wipe the phone of all my files and currently installed apps, not a good idea as I use it for work............Thanks for any advice in advance

Yes, I think you have to wipe user data. The upcoming FOTA final release may (ought to) preserve your apps and data.

The reason I asked is the Flash software has Firmware update facility, I was wondering if it would just update the OS and not affect anything else?

The flash software also allows to unchecked user data,  but the beta test requirements says:
The beta releases will be provided in SP Flash Tool compatible format only. No OTA or recovery updates will be available. As a beta tester you are obliged to flash every release as a clean installation by choosing the 'Firmware Upgrade' option in the flasher app. When updating to a new beta version, you are not allowed to keep your old user data, the userdata partition always have to be overwritten by the one contained in the ROM

Yes you are right all partitions needs to be checked while you changing system version.
