I have a pretty big problem here. I have a requirement to root the phone because certain specialized apps I use for work need to install a few files into the system area of the ROM.  No matter what I do though, I cannot get Flash_Tool to not crash as soon as I hook the phone up to the USB port of a windows machine. The drivers are properly installed on the PC and I am using the correct scatter file. I click on the download button and plug the usb cable into a usb port on the pc, Flash_Tool recognizes the phone at first (the data about it comes up in the lower left hand corner of Flash_Tool and then I get the dreaded Flash_Tool has stopped working message. I have tried this on two different Windows 10 (64bit) systems and 1 Windows 7 (64bit) system. Same result on all three machines. I can't use this phone if I can't root it so I am hoping someone has an answer to this before I send it back.

When I tried to flash TWRP via SP Flash tool I had similar issues. However I just kept trying using different USB ports on my laptop, try that and also press volume buttons while connecting the phone to your pc.

Thanks for your replies but unfortunately nothing works. If I hold down the volume key when plugging into a USB port I get an error message about the preloader being invalid. If I don't hold down the volume key then Flash_Tool will crash when I connect. I have tried every USB port in 3 different PC's with the same results. I have to have root and quite frankly, this has been a nightmare. I have been trying to get root on the phone for over 12 hours now. It would not have taken me even 12 minutes on the last 3 phones I owned. I find it hard to believe that people think this is acceptable (I am refering to MediaTek). UMI should understand that their customers do have valid reasons to root a phone and they should do a better job at trying to provide rerasonable (trust me...Fast_Tool is not reasonable...it is sadistic) solutions for their customers. I really did not have a big complaints about the phone itself excpet for the standard volume level, proximity sensor only working when it feels like it complaints but UMI has lost my business because this was an absolute nightmare and is one I never want to revisit again.

I found a solution to my particular problem with Flash_Tool and wanted to pass the info on. This may or may not solve your problem with Flash_Tool not working properly because it is a very outdated tool and as such, it is very temperamental (especially on Windows 10). The solution I discovered does not make a whole lot of sense but I had tried everything else and thought it would not hurt to give it a try. I simply opened up Flash_Tool and then opened its option menu. I then clicked on "connection" from the option menu. The connection option menu has a USB section that by default should have the USB speed set to "High speed", the "Timeout" set to 60 min and the "Battery" section set to auto detect. I left everything set to the default settings except for the "Battery" section. That section I changed to w/o battery since the phone is turned off.

Flashing TWRP recovery worked like a charm after I made that change.
