I'm in Croatia right now and my German Telekom Data Sim doesn't work in the UMI Z.
It works in my Samsung S4 Mini though.
I've activated roaming, the connection seems to be stable - but no data connection is possible.
I'm on the current 7.1.1 and in my home country Germany everything seems fine with the Simcard and the rest of the phone.

My Solution: Get to know your Firewall Apps... Some of them block all apps by default when you're roaming.
you are right.
I was roaming in Slovakia and Poland. I experienced the same problem at the beginning. then I solve it like this.
first, restart your phone.
second, go to setting - more - cellular networks - network operators / when it finishes searching click on choose automatically.
it worked for me when I did this procedure twice.
Unfortunately that didn't work for me. Tried it several times now.
Tomorrow I'll go back to Germany - so I'll have to drive without Spotify ;D
Hopefully I won't get in this situation again.
Did you check APN on different device when in roaming and copy this details to umi Z?
Also did you activated data roaming in network itself?
I don't know how to help you more as my data in roaming is working fine.

Thanks for this comment as well. For some users this should be a good advice.
My problem was caused by an absolutely different thing - and I'm feeling quite stupid right now:
I'm using a firewall that blocks / controls various apps. And this app had an roaming option, too - where every app is blocked by default...
