Cannot Transfer file from super to win 8.1

I am having difficulty transferring files (word, zip etc) from UMI Super to my laptop using windows 8.1 - The laptop only recognises the Umi Super as a media player. Can somebody please help?

When you connecting your device to computer you should get on phone pop up window with question what you want to do (charging phone, transfer files etc). If you are not getting this please go to settings - about phone - and click few times (8 or 10) on build number and you should get access to developer option. Then go to settings - developer options - select usb configuration and choose MTP. Then try again with computer.

Thanks. I do get the pop up but selecting MTP or any other setting makes no difference.

Is there anything else I can try?

Is your phone rooted?. Tell me software build number settings - about phone - build number.
Are you using genuine USB wire and USB 2.0 (black not blue) there should be no differences but maybe there is some fault.
Are you using SD card in your phone?

not rooted. build no. v3.02_20161017

I am using the USB cable provided with the phone and tried all the different ports on my laptop.

I originally transferred the files from another laptop running windows 7 (I no longer have this laptop).

there is no SD card in the phone
