If you trying update and phone is stuck on reboot then most time factory reset helps.
No definitely you no need every time perform factory reset before every FOTA update.
You can always use SPFT tool to update your phone to latest software if is not showing on FOTA update.
To be not loosing user data while you updating through to SPFT you can uncheck user data partition.

I dont understard. I did what you said first, a factory reset and the "rebooting" problem was solved and I could finally update to the 20161017. I though that would solve the issue for good but now you are saying I have to do that procedure?!
Why cant the FOTA updates work properly?! Whats going on with UMI. I used to recommend this phone to everyone, now I dont.

There was only problem with 20160810 software. All other FOTA update working correctly. We don't know how strong and how long access you have to Internet which could cause harder access to FOTA updates. You need understand that server could be overloaded when you checking for updates.
That why if you want update your device to different firmware and you not getting FOTA notification you can use SPFT tool.
I have a 100mbit/s fiber connection so that's no excuse. And doing that procedure will make me wipe all the data it took me time to set up again, after your suggested reset! This is all unacceptable, speak to UMi engineers and explain them this is only making UMi brand look bad.
