I've had this a few times, most recently last week...
I could feel a short vibration when the phone was plugged into a charger, but got no response from any of the buttons.
The solution was to disconnect the battery for a few seconds, before reconnecting again.
This involves taking off the back cover and unscrewing two small screws that hold a metal plate in place - the battery connector is under there.
