The google search toolbar on launcher should be a widget, I bet that most of UMI owners don't even use it and it takes space that could be used for another icons.

A lot of stock launcher have that fixed google search box on the top. My opinion about that is such yours. However, there are plenty of different launchers available at Google Play store for your choice. My recommendation is Holo Launcher HD since that's simple (stock looking), doesn't need serious resources but still very customizable. Of course, you can choose anything other to get rid of that fixed search box.
