Backup / Restore user data in stock recovery

Hi guys,

I have been struggling a LOT with getting the new OTA.
In the ned I had to downgrade via SPFT 2 version back to get my phone working again.
During the process I noticed that the stock recovery has an option to Backup and Restore user data.

Any clue how does this work and whether it is reliable?
If I back it up and perform factory reset - is this going to bring all my app and setting back?
I guess a SD card is required, isn't it?

it is the same app available on the phone for backup and reset, and it requires an SD card
app date is not backed up
