Install the Nova Launcher... then you can do it.

Settings -> Apps -> Disable Google App

That's what I did and it disabled the Google searchbar. Maybe some other things but I didn't even notice then and I did that one week ago ;)

I have already tried it and it works although I can not use the Google Chrome anymore.

It is also VERY interesting the other side effect: when you remove the searchbar you can not place any other icon within that top space (4x1)

Oh, I use Firefox, hence why I didn't notice it would disable Chrome

I support Kaluschke's opinion of installing Nova Launcher. So much better than any pre installed launcher.
And you can take advantage of the big resolution much better by adding more columns/rows of apps on the homescreen.
