It works if you start typing any numbers or any part of a name (not only the family name) at its beginning. If you're looking for John Carpenter, why would you start typing 'ohn'? Who can remember the middle part of a name word but not its fist letter. In this case, regardless of that you start typing John or Carpenter, the search engine will work. You can search for numbers by starting typing them at any digit of them on the dial screen. That seems to be rational for me.
