We have two apps for using and searching our phonebook contacts named: "Phone" and "Contacts"

Icons:

Telephony_contacts.jpg

Contact search is different in each of them:

Phone: if I start to enter number, any part of it anywhere in a contact number - it finds every combination very fast ("INSTRING" function as some prog. languages call it)
but if I start with letters (names of contacts) it never shows anything with a partial name - requires full Family name - and doesn't react on "Given name" field.

Contacts: If I need a number search I must start entering it from the beginning as it is entered in a phonebook, e.g:  +3859923.... ("INCREMENTAL" function) - it does not react on "INSTRING".
This greatly reduces search usefullness. Name search is better, can use "INSTRING" behaviour.

I would like to have all types of search the same - react to pattern anywhere in any phonebook field, letters or numbers. ("INSTRING")
Now if I remember just a part of a contact name or it's number I must carefully choose which app should be used as wrong one will stay blank.

Dear krbo,

It works if you start typing any numbers or any part of a name (not only the family name) at its beginning. If you're looking for John Carpenter, why would you start typing 'ohn'? Who can remember the middle part of a name word but not its fist letter. In this case, regardless of that you start typing John or Carpenter, the search engine will work. You can search for numbers by starting typing them at any digit of them on the dial screen. That seems to be rational for me.

Bence

To be rational first you must be consistent.

same type of search across all apps - not changing search rules in every one of them

if you remember just a sequence of numbers from a phone number isn't pretty useless to beign type from the beginning which is not known to you?

And you didn't read carefully - if I search for full Given name in "Phones" result is empty, nothing - search must be done with Family name.

example, searching for a female name "Vesna" in both apps:

result from Contacts:

so there are three of them , now the same search from Phone app:

Nothing at all!

Maybe I was enough careful.
Here's a sample video (showing public numbers only):

It works with any names stored in the contact list.
Try to search for names that doesn't contain special characters of your specific language.

As you can see above, name "Vesna" does not contain any specific character - plain ASCII and Phone app can't find any of three occurrences in my Phonebook.

Will look and comment your video later.

On your screenshot that's visible at least one (full) name contains at least one special character. I didn't think about Vanessa, of course and that was just a suggestion, not a verdict.
I'd kindly help you if I could reproduce your issue. Without that I can't what to report to the engineer team.

In that case private numbers would be visible in the video, so I can't undertake to record a such one. You can start to type a number from its any digit to search for it in the dialer and it works. I wouldn't have said it if I hadn't have checked it before.
