Yes,

the GPS signal apparently works correctly, because google maps localizes without problems my position, for example, in my home. But the problem appears when you want to use the umi as gps navigator, walking around the city or in the car. As you said, the signal of GPS starts to jump around 20 - 50 meters where you are, and it means a significant risk when you are driving.

This is the risk to buy a chinese smartphone, maybe these first units have this problem that will be fixed in a new ones, and I'm not sure if UMI will solve the problem for the owners of these first units.

So, I'm not sure if this problem is caused by the mediatek chipset or maybe if is a software problem.. it will be good that UMI answers to this question. Obviously, I can't recomend this smartphone to my friends or family until this company proves that the problem has been fixed

Regards,

To prove that we are not just making this up I have taken a screengrab from my phone whilst I was on a long drive from Cornwall.

The cruise control in the car was set to 70mph (113kmh), and as this is the UK we drive on the left hand side of the road. Now the GPS raw position (indicated by the blue dot) is  all over the place. IT usually starts drifting away in one direction and then slowly comes back and goes away again.

This is not so much of a problem on the motorway, but in the middle of a town on tiny roads sometimes it thinks I am on an other street and then it all becomes messy...

But even on the motorway when there is a road close enough it jumps me there, and than the sat nav starts recalculating the route and tells me to turn left right etc... and then suddenly I am back on the motorway.

Additionally due to the position moving all over the place overspeed warnings are useless - just check the current speed indicated by the satnav - as I have written above I was doing constant 113kmh...

Don't you have a metalized windshield on your car? iGO seems to lose the GPS signal sometimes and just try to predict the ongoing direction.

No, it's just a normal non heated non tinted windscreen.

I have experienced the same behaviour yesterday when I was cycling. Whilst I was standstill the distance covered went up to 10-15-20-25 etc meters... and my position moved around. So just like what you see in the video.

Is there a reasonable chance to expect a fix for this? Or should I return the phone? If so, would the retailer (Banggood) accept a return in this case?

Hi,

in my case, the retailer, Umioffice, said that is not possible to return the phone because I received the phone at may 3th, and the solution proposed was to take the phone to repair and they would assume the 50% of the cost... Below you have the answer:

we have warranty, but it not means for replace.
for all phone brand, after 2months use, can not replace with new phone.
i think you know this.
try to go to repair center if they can repair it.
we can undertake half of it

Obviously, I won't take the phone to repair, I hope this problem can be solved in a new OTA..

Hi,
I bought my phone from UMIOffice on Aliexpress and after a month of use the GPS issues began.
It took a minute to get a signal and the fix was with 38m accuracy (which is not enough to navigate with). After I contacted the store I have sent the phone back and got a new one.
The new one was fine but at the times pass the issues starts again. If it took 3 seconds to get a fix when I got it, it's now takes 10 and again the response time is bad- if I stop while driving the GPS continues the ride.... and more issues.
I think this is a bad hardware issue and a bad assembly- I assume that since the phone has the tendency to worm up it eventually hurt the antenna.
UMI is handling this issue very poorly.

I'm quite good at mending smartphones if they're in my hand but not that good remotely, when a use ...

its not good enough to say just send it back to your seller as this costs $$$$ in postage and it may not be the problem......I trusted you in giving me and good phone and I also bought the UMI Super which has the same problem!!!!!!!

I think I will not be buying anymore UMI products in future....
