Thanks for the advice. I have been looking at your ebay link but there are few options ...
Yes, sorry! I opted for One Plus Three. It really works fine, and as mentioned, has a small 'click' as you push it in. You can actually hold the phone opside-down with the cable without the phone falling out. You can't do that with the UMi one!!!

Same problem everywhere I think. I solved this problem by cutting off half a millimeter of the plastic of the plug of a standard usb-c cable. This way it fits perfectly with a small 'click' in the 'PLUS' because the metal part of the plug becomes half a mm longer. You can do it easily with a hobby knife. You just have to be a little creative.
I just got my Umi Plus. Looks like it's a pretty decent phone for the price, but the USB cable issue is super annoying. I did what Djingo suggested and cut off a bit of the black bumper on the cable and that worked. It's a pretty silly problem to have to deal with though, even for a budget phone. I'm waiting to see how well the GPS is working as I've heard nothing but bad comments about it just about everywhere. I wish I'd read these forums before I purchased the phone. And it also looks like I'm going to have to order a case and screen protector from Ali Express with a wait time of about 2 months for delivery. Sheesh.
You already can buy the stock USB cable for UMi Plus here: http://bit.ly/2hy3ozi
As a more flexible, durable and much cheaper device I still recommend to use this cable from Bastec: http://bit.ly/2hfTlzu
Even the 200cm variant can charge your UMi Plus with a 12V/1A power as like the stock one can.
