Dear peejayw,
By your words it seems that you're at the border of a 4G covered area. So the solution in your case is to set the preferred network type to 3G.
The GPS issue howerver is a specific (probably hardware) problem at some devices. If it makes your phone useless, I suggest you to contact your reseller to get your phone repaired or replaced.
