G'day,
Can anyone on this forum or from UMI advise if and when UMI might have a rooted ROM available over FOTA?

Thanks and regards.

If you make your phone rooted, you won't be able to receive FOTA updates anymore. You won't be even notified about them. So you have to frequently check this site to be informed about updates.
However, you can recover the original state of your phone anytime by flashing a stock ROM with SP Flash Tool. You can find the most recent version HERE
By this method the warranty status of your phone will also be recovered.

Regards,
Bence

Bence,

That's why I'm asking about if/when UMI might offer a rooted ROM via FOTA.

Would love to hear from an UMI person about this. Hope they are reading this forum/post.

Dear Bonkers,

Unfortunately that's not possible to apply FOTA updates on rooted phones. It was an interesting adventure by UMI to release factory rooted smartphones but anyway, that's not a normal behavior from a serious brand. Beside that it carries real security issues, a lot of security sensitive applications simply refuse to run on rooted devices. On the other hand, that's still not complicated to root a UMI phone if that's your need.
That's still under consideration at UMI, how to make it possible to provide custom ROMs for UMI Touch and later models.
I hope that doesn't disappoint you but I am the representative of UMI here as a technical support.

Thanks bencebacsi,
Appreciate the reply. If I did root the phone I know I will not get updates to the ROM via FOTA.

What would be the procedure to make FOTA possible? I assume something like
1. unroot the phone
2. install the FOTA update
3. Root the phone again

Your advise and possibly a more expanded explanion/procedure would be much appreciated.

I ask because I have installed and currently use Titanium Backup Pro on my other 2 phones
and would like to use it on th UMI Touch.

Regards to you.

The best option is to store your Titanium Backup data on the memory card (mounted as portable storage), so flashing wiping processes won't touch it.
Anyway that's easy to go back and forth between a rooted and a clean stock state system.
So, starting from a clean stock system:
1. Root your phone via TWRP. Use THIS THREAD.
2. Install Titanium Backup and set the SD card as the place of backups in its settings.
3. Make your backups periodically.
4. If you want to apply a FOTA update, find the latest update in the ROM section and install it with SPFT.
5. Process the FOTA update, then repeat the rooting process described in point 1.
6. Install Titanium Backup again (you even can do it in TWRP if you've created a recovery installer with TB) and restore your backuped apps and data.

P.s.: If you can wait for a few more days, you can bypass the FOTA update process after its SPFT version got released.

Sincerely,
Bence

Hi bencebacsi,
Thanks for the explanation. Can I assume that I don't need to unroot before applying the latest update via SPFT as the update process will itself remove root?

The rest of your instructions I understand.

Regards.

Hi bencebacsi,

One more thing. Do I need to creat a custom recovery each time I root/reroot the phone?

If so, how do I go about creating such a custom recovery?

Thanks and regards.
