IMX164 should have been a typo, since as far as I know, that's not an existing model.

Funny you should say that , I did a quick google , and seemingly one of the phones with this sensor , if not the only one,  is umi fair . As I say , I wouldn't know which is better (assuming 164 exists ), it is the disparity of quoted specifications which I find interesting . I so want this phone to be the real deal , great ecs  with a price I don't mind paying for my daughters to have.

Now I asked UMI (they're sleeping at this moment) to clarify this situation about UMI Fair since a camera sensor called IMX164 doesn't exist in Sony's portfolio. Maybe the page designer got a specs list with this typo and just repeated that wrong data multiple times. That should also be an IMX179 sensor, I think.
I agree with that, UMI Rome seems to be a champion in its category, regardless of the camera sensor.

It might be in other articles , but I am referring to a Gizchina item about umi fair , and I think they would be just repeating specs as provided by umi . Weirdly it's been on resellers that  I have seen the 164 -just can't fathom why they would change it . And  wouldn't/shouldn't someone at umi be aware and acting on it  -if the sensor doesn't exist , it looks unprofessional.

Just some personal thoughts... Some years ago I was used to write a lot of advertisements with full of specs data for mobile phones. Believe me, that's very easy to make some mistakes in that ocean of numbers and codes. On the other hand, those were hundreds of ads in some years but UMI should do it perfectly at less than ten models. Anyway, UMI's product pages are created by a talented (in my opinion) graphics designer, but she is not a technician.

I suspect you're correct about the sensor , nobody else seems to have heard of it either , and it only seems to appear in 'reviews' about the fair , though uhans u200 has also been referenced. Umi have been consistent in their advertising (I think ) with 179 , so I guess your friend is safe - it seems to be when the resellers get hold of the copy that it gets changed . But once deceived it's easy to see a conspiracy in everything-there were many inaccuracies with emax !

My real (first world ) problem at the moment is :in a couple of stores xiaomi redmi note 2 is available for practically the same as rome . You know a lot about phones - must be a no-brainer , surely, redmi note 2 ?

The redmi note 2 is an old(er) phone with obsolete hardware. I think, that's not a competitor of the Rome.
