The 5.5 inch 1080p display is ample for most users. Only if you use it for high definition VR like the Google Cardboard, you would see the difference with 2K or 4K screens, but for what most mortals use their smartphones for, the 1920 x 1080 resolution is as good as it needs to be. The screen size of 5.5 inch is fairly common these days, but it is also the ideal size in my opinion. Anything larger, I personally no longer consider it as a phone; anything smaller is getting more and more inconvenient both for touch and reading.
Backed with 3GB of RAM and 16GB of ROM, the 64 bit MediaTek 6753's Octa Core can handle almost any task you will throw at it. It's not at the higest range of the spec and the Mali 720 GPU isn't up to speed with the cutting edge games, but it is well above average. It's one of the areas where UMi made the smart choice of being modest in favor of more battery life. I can live with the choice they made. Except when playing resource intensive games, I have never had any stuttering or lag during operation. It can handle the job and does it well.
The Lithium-Polymer battery delivers a stunning 4000mAh of power and makes sure you'll last several days with average use. Even for a power user the phone's battery will last all day. There aren't that many smartphones out there doing better or equal. Unfortunately charging such a large battery takes some time. I'm really missing QuickCharge here. Imagine what the 4000mAh + QuickCharge combo would be capable of. A missed opportunity, I think.
It has a super fast and accurate fingerprint scanner. Contrary to many Chinese phone makers UMi decided to put the fingerprint scanner on the front. I'm not decided yet on which side I prefer the fingerprint reader to be. I guess they both have their advantages and disadvantages. Maybe somebody should make a phone with two fingerprint scanners: one on the front and one on the back. Anyway, what's most important is that it should be as accurate and fast as the one in the UMi Touch. Personally I think the fingerprint reader blends in nicely with the 2.5D arc screen.
The camera's are the area where UMi still has some work to do. With 5 MP on the front and a Sony 13 MP on the back, the specs are nice. The photo's taken are not as nice as I would have expected from the hardware. I suspect that it's the software that is lacking potential, because the hardware should perform much better. Especially in low light conditions and with much light - like sun-lit snowy landscapes - most pocket camera's will do a better job. I've had phones with similar camera specs that performed much better.
On the connection site, however, things look very bright. Up to with dual band a/b/g/n Wifi, Bluetooth 4.1 and 4G you will find no trouble staying connected to the internet and accessories. Unforunately NFC is missing, but that's not so surprising. I'm very happy that 4G bands 3, 7 and 20 are all supported and therefore will keep you connected while travelling through Europe. Especially the low frequency band 20 is important in rural areas and was missing on the Iron Pro and the eMAX. Good job!
But what's really differentiating UMi from the rest is ROOTJOY. I just love it and the fact that the ROMs are pre-rooted makes me even happier. Maybe not all the ROMs are my style, but the fact that I have a choice is such an improvement over other phone brands.
Summarizing, the UMi Touch is not a top-notch phone, but a very decent one. It can handle most tasks with ease and can do so for a long time thanks to the large battery. The phone has lots of memory and a very capable CPU/GPU combo. A very nice phone for an even nicer price. A++ |
