In Android 7 go to Settings -> Battery and tick Battery Percentage.

In Android 6 pull down the quick settings and hold down the little gear icon. After that you will have "System UI tuner" near the end of your settings  list. This will allow you to show battery percentage.

I am using gravitybox [MM] to replace the battery with a circle containing the percentage and I know there are additional settings. This app - however - requires you to be rooted and running the xposed framework.
