Problematic Sound and power Buttons

My umi iron pro phone has been acting insanely recently.sound  button and power button does not work most of the time. yet, they function properly when I least expect it.sometimes i can't turn off or restart my phone or lower volume because corrresponding buttons do not work.Anyone who experienced the same problem? Why does it happen?is it about software or hardware?

Have you updated the rom?  
Sounds like you need a fresh install to see if the problem is hardware related or software.

Attention, you should power off your phone before you flash it.
