My take on the 3 types of cases I mentioned.
1. S-View Case - the sides are high enough to reach just below the top surface of the screen. Placed flat with screen down and cover flipped back, screen will contact table surface.
2. "Z" Case - the four corners are higher than the screen. Placed flat with screen down, screen does not touch the table surface.
3. Soft TPU clear case - I got the "cheaper" cversion, so called original. The sides of the case is way below the screen. In fact, it's flushed with the height of the unibody shell.
Among all the three, I cannot say which is the best as they also have their own drawbacks.
1. S-View Case - a bit clumsy for me when using the phone with the front cover flipped back. An inward sliding movement of this can trigger the lock screen, although I'm not sure it's phone or case problem. Fully closed, it can offer some protection if the phone falls flat on its face. But if it contacts a sharp corner hard enough, I think it may still shatter the screen through the front cover. With cover closed, the grip is good.
2. "Z" Case - used with a glass/nano film (more susceptible to light scratches, though it does not affect function), it should provide a better degree of protection. However, the corners are the only attachment points to the phone. If impacted "correctly", it may just come off and that exposed corner could well be the damage propagation point. Also, the sides of the phone is bare hence, a very slippery feel when handling the phone.
3. Soft TPU Case - provides good grip. But least protection. Even with a protector on, high chance the screen will suffer major damage.
The bast case would be one where the sides are higher than the screen, but it will very likely look ungainly if you notice the profile of the phone. The 2.5D design may look good, but it's a protection nightmare as even glass protectors can never reach the edges of the screen. Nano protectors are slightly bigger but I'm not sure how well they stand on screen damage. I mean, the glass protector is meant to break instead of the screen. The nano film protector is designed NOT to break - so, will the damage be transmitted past it to the screen/display? I don't know and don't hope to find out the hard way. LOL.
Still scouting around for better ones.
