Since applying the latest OTA yesterday I'm seeing a different behaviour using the fingerprint sensor to unlock the phone and frankly it's really irritating.

Previously as long as the phone was on using the fingerprint sensor unlocked it to the desktop. This was true whether the phone had been locked by a quick press of the power button or via software/app. The only different scenario was directly after a full phone reboot at which point it prompted for a pattern as well.

Now if the phone has been locked with a quick press of the power button then it still works in the same way but if it has been locked via a launcher action or app it always prompts for the unlock pattern even after using the fingerprint which seems to be overkill and makes using the fingerprint pretty pointless.  Disabling the unlock pattern (or equivalent) also means disabling the fingerprint unlock.

I have tried unconfiguring and re-configuring but it just happens again

Is there a fix for this?

I can not confirm this. I am using Nova Launcher and I just tried it. Nova required me to set the app as device administrator and told me fingerprint unlock would NOT work. However, I can unlock the device using the fingerprint sensor, even if I lock the device using the Nova Action.

Same issue for me. I use Nova Launcher, but if I try with a different screen lock it's the same situation.
I think this is a bug of Mashmallow.
