Ah, a fix for 'not enough free space on system' - reboot to recovery and clear the cache (nothing else). Reboot, retry the OTA update and it will work.
This update has been a pretty terrible experience to install!
That's not the bootloader but the factory mode. You can start the bootloader by powering on your phone while pressing down the volume up button. You can move in the bootloader menu with the vol up button and select an item with the vol down button.
That's enough to just unmount (Eject) the SD card before starting the update process, then (after finishing the update process) you can mount it again and everything will remain stayed.The whole process needs just a few minutes.
I had the same issue and I could solve it but I don't know yet, what you need minimally to change to be successful. If you make a factory data reset, then at the first boot up you cancel to add your google account (you don't synchronize anything), just connect to a WiFi router, the update process will be successful. Maybe that's enough to just unmount the external memory card if you have one installed and used as internal storage.
Yes, this update creates a new partition structure for the storage devices, so you probably need to unmount the sd card before processing the update, then you have to reformat the memory card.
