Hi, I have had a UMI Rome X for about two weeks and I really like the phone - or the hardware at least! There are a couple of serious flaws in the software though.

Firstly, apps that are meant to run at startup don't. For example, I installed GSam Battery Monitor - when running, this app has a permanent notification showing the battery percentage. If I reboot the phone, this notification does not appear - until I run the app. This also affects updating widgets (like the Weather & Clock widget from devexpert) and receiving notifications from PayPal, eBay etc... It may even have contributed to a few SMS messages being lost, although I can't be sure about that.

Secondly, background services do not run correctly. Taking GSam Battery Monitor as an example again - when you run the app the notification appears. If you then swipe right on the list of running tasks, the app if killed - along with the notification! This is not normal Android behaviour. I have at least 8 other Android devices in the house, running versions from 4.4 to 6.0 - no other device does this when you swipe to close an app.

Thirdly, the battery percentage sometimes stops updating. So you might think the phone is 75% charged, then it just dies. The first time this happened I thought the phone was actually broken, because I saw it was charged then it would not turn on.

The Rome X is not supported in your RootJoy software at the moment - any chance of getting an OTA update to fix these issues?

КАК УДАЛИТЬ ВИРУС Adware.MyFolder.4.origin?

How to remove the virus Adware.MyFolder.4.origin?
Good day! Help someone. Problem: The built-in browser periodically opens the advertising pages itself when making calls, working with applications. When you open the application, ads pop up. Doctor Web identified the virus: Adware.MyFolder.4.origin in the program FWUpgradeProvider.odex The attempt to remove the program through root access was unsuccessful.

Hi. Seems these are fairly old posts and most have moved on to greener pastures regarding their phones.  I bought my mom a Rome X, after I was quite happy with my "Touch". Its a solid phone, more so than the "Touch" but the software, I noticed, is rather bad. The battery life is very short, the phone responds slowly to input and I constantly received spam messages, automatic subscription to services and random web pages opening. Today I researched a bit and found FOTA to be the possible culprit. There are several posts regarding it having been shipped with integrated spyware. Ive now disabled it, lets see how it goes. I seldom or never use the GPS function, but from experience, I have found my UMI "Touch"GPS functions useless, so perhaps the issue is across various models. The possible FOTA spyware has left a bad impression of UMI. I'll definately rather look at alternative options for a replacement phone in the future

No updates via FOTA are available, until today.

I really did not wanted to lose my existing data, ...

You can make it with SP Flash Tool, just leave checked the boot and system partitions only and your user data will remain untouched. In the case if SP Flash Tool refuses to flash your phone by this way (I can't try it by my own) and you get the "PMT changed for the ROM..." error message, please come back and I'll offer a more compicated but still working method. You also may visit this page to get info about how to backup and restore your user data. I also can recommend to use Titanium Backup before flashing a new ROM.

I got and have provided the (official) flash tool installer of the v3.02 version firmware.
http://co ...

Thanks for providing that ROM. I have installed it and things are looking MUCH better!
- Apps run at startup, which means that widgets also update.
- Background services keep running after an app has been closed.
- Notifications arrive, even immediately after a reboot, without having to open the app.

The only other problem I had noticed was the battery indicator sometimes stops updating. I haven't noticed this happening yet, but it's a bit harder to test.

So I definitely recommend installing this update! Thanks for all your help in getting these issues fixed.

Now I need to work out what to do with the Rome X - my wife has now decided that 5.5" is too big! (insert your own joke about penis size here)

FOTA will be available next week.

Maybe they still have issues with the FOTA server. Unfortunately I can't access the UMI crew in the weekend. Next week I'm going to request an official flash tool update at least for the case if the FOTA method still doesn't work.

The recent info says that, the update is ready to upload, just the engineers have some issues with the FOTA server.
I suggest you to check the update regularly until you'll be able to download it.

I received another email from UMI:

Hi,

I have reported to engineer

Best regards.

Maybe an engineer will actually look at the problem? Hope so...

Exactly the same problem here. The apps do not stay running in the background.
Cannot get any notifications because of that.
Went through all settings, restored, everything, until I have found your message.

The weather widget only shows data and works if the app is running in the background.
I open it manualy and it works until I swipe it away. After that, the widget and the notifications are dead.
If you restart the phone, the widget will not show any data, until the app is open manually again.
That happens exactly the same to all the other apps.
Basically, it only works as a phone for making phone calls, or as a smartphone, if you open each app manually.
No notification from services such as Whatsapp, Viber, Gmail etc etc etc.
Serious bug in the software!
Have the latest version available, with no updates for a fix at sight.
Any expectation to when it will be fixed?

I'm glad (well, not glad, but you know what I mean) that I'm not the only one with this issue. Still no response from UMI though?

I understand. It can be very frustating being a recent phone.

I really hope UMI comes forward with a quick fix for this situation and soon.

Certainly, there is going to be a lot more people out there with the same issue, maybe they have just not realized it yet.

I think everyone with this issue, should come forward, drop a message on the main Forum, by letting everyone know about this situation.

Only by speaking out, we will get our words listen, and hopefully soon, UMI will fix it.

I received a reply from UMI's after sales team - not much of a response though...

Hi,

For your first issue please try with application like Start up manager

For your second application, this is defined by android itself not us.

For the third when Rome X will be in Rootjoy I suggest you to flash it, but I don't know when it will be in there.

Best regards.

They do not seem to care at all about this issues or their customers if that matters.

I have been seeing a lot of issues and no replies from them, no resolutions whatsoever.

I still have got no reply to my messages or emails.

How can we reach them, to make them understand that this is a software bug and not a easy-fix an end-user can do?

The software is buggie and has issues. How they expect me to pay for a smartphone and get a regular phone instead?

Without the apps this is just a regular phone.
I can have the apps, but they don't work on the background.

What's the point oh having Viber, Whatsapp, Gmail, etc, if none of it work to receive notifications, alerts, messages, calls? What is the point?

Can someone at UMI please verify this ISSUE and FIX IT ugently?

Hi simonjewell,

Have you manage to sort out this problem?

UMI does not say anything. They do not reply to their customers issues.

I have sent them messages, emails, and so far not a single word from them.

This is a software issue, created by UMI, and only UMI can fix it.

Have you managed a work-around or got any solution to our problems?

Regards,

No. Nothing I'm afraid. I have bought another phone - a Doogee X5S - also running Android 5.1, but working properly. I was able to get a partial refund from my seller on Aliexpress, so now I have a £34 paperweight sitting on my desk until UMI fixes the issue.

We need a new firmware - our best hope is for an alternative OS through RootJoy, but there is no word on when (or if) the Rome X will be supported. It is a new product, so I understand that these things take time. But someone from UMI should be able to at least verify the existence of the issue (it can be done in 5 minutes) and confirm that they are working on a solution.

I now have this image in my head of two guys in a garden shed with "UMI" painted above the door

UMI informed me about that, a FOTA update to version v3.02_20160120 is available. Please check it in your phone's settings menu, download and install it.
