Hi guys,

Think i may have bricked my iron beyond repair

I got the issue where t was asking me for the privacy protection password after I tried to install an SD card (which i think is absolutely ridiculous inthe first place).

After doing some reading I realised I'd have to "Format + Download" using SP Tools.

I'd never used SP tools before so I sort of struggled to figure out what I was doing and had issues installing the usb drivers to windows 10. I think what seems to have happened is that the phone has become disconnected perhaps halfway through doing the wipe and flash in SP tools and now I can't get windows to recognise the device and it won't turn on at all.

~The most I can do with my phone at the moment is aconnect it to my PC via usb and it will come up in Device Manager as an Unknown Device. Other than that, I can't do anything else.

Please help...my phone is a complewte brick and I have no idea how to fix it

Hello,

All guides say that, you may choose the 'Download Only' or the 'Firmware Upgrade' option but never the 'Format All + Download'. If you still can see your phone in the device manager, then at least the preloader might be still intact. So first you should install the proper drivers. Get the sources from this page: http://community.umidigi.com/thread-1376-1-2.html
I also suggest you to use another USB port (one on the back panel of your PC) and another USB cable.
We should know that, from where did you get the sources for your flashing operation that ended up with a failure. Could you provide its link?

Hi BB,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, it was advice you gave to another user about the "format + download" option (http://community.umidigi.com/for ... ypeid%26typeid%3D30) In any event, I'm not entirely sure if that has caused the issue, but I'd be really grateful for any help you can offer to help me get the drivers installed in Windows 10 and hopefully sort the issue through a SP Tools re-flash.

The main issue I have got at the moment is getting the drivers installed. My device will not turn on, I have 4 USB cables in front of me and am struggling to get any of them (using various ports) to give me anything of any note in device manager besides "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed). So I suppose it is somewhat positive that the device is still regestering something with my PC, but I have no idea how to move things forward.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ok I have opened the phone up and disconnected the battery and that seems to have reset things to a point whereby if I now connect it to the PC via usb I get the Preloader USB VCOM appearing. Unfortunately it will disconnect itself very quickly from the PC again and I do not have enough time to do "update drivers" before it disappears from Device Manager.

Any ideas?

I feel like this is small progress!

Another update....!

I've managed to bring my phone back to life by doing a download only via SP Tools (flashing only boot). The phone boots up and gets to the Android set up screen (choose language) but then the Enter Privacy Protection Password screen that caused me to try and wipe the phone in the first place has appeared again.

So I guess my question now is what am I supposed to do to get rid of the Privacy Protection Password prompt!?

Well I finally got there with a format and then a flash.

Wiped the IMEI numbers from NVRAM so had to re-write those too.

What a major fuss, but glad I finally got it all fixed.

Is the Privacy Protection Password lock malware related, or is it related to something I set up on my phone. It happened when I tried to put an SD card in the phone and the sim fell out. When I put it back in the lock appeared.

Is there anything I can do to prevent it from happening again in future if I ever want to remove the sim or insert an SD card?

So, now you know why I recommended the Format All + Download option in that specific case only. Anyway, I'm glad to see that you could resurrect your phone finally. The privacy protection code was saved in the NVRAM partition and that partition can be erased by a full flash format only (or by setting its memory area before formatting but that's too complicated). The code was probably written by a malware app but I didn't have the chance until now to discover it. Remove or disable the Supercleaner app and this problem probably won't happen again in the future. You can give an additional protection to your phone by removing the root privileges.

They must be the DP and DM (or D+ and D-) points. They can be used for flashing the preloader only but that's needed only if even the preloader is damaged or erased on your phone. Of course, you have to connect them in the same way as a USB cable when flashing: first you click the Download button, then connect the cable. If no labels on the board (they should be) you can measure 3.3V between the points and the ground, theoretically.
