I believe it is the image compression. At first I thought it was the sharpen filter (because it looks like someone just put too much sharpening on the images), but that sounds like a probable factor. The images are 4160*3120 Yet are only around 1Mb, which means there's a LOT of compression going on. Umi, Is there a way to enable shooting in RAW so we can test this? Or is there a way we can have a compression slider to reduce compression?
Also, I noticed ISO of 100 makes images MUCH better (on rom V02), and going to image properties and setting sharpness to LOW also helps a lot.
I also took a comparison of ISO 400 with sharpness on low and medium. NOTE: THIS LOOKS REALLY BAD BECAUSE I HAD DIGITAL ZOOM IN ALL THE WAY. Doing so provides emphasis on the grain.
Look at the top right corner, where there is orange, and you'll see the difference. Also look at the clarity of the "HP" Also, look at the bottom right corner, with sharpening on medium you can't read "bonus software."
Sharpen low:

Sharpen Medium:

Also, if the eMax is indeed using the Sony Exmor IMX214, it has the ability to shoot 4k@30fps and 720p@120fps (and, of course, 1080p@60fps which is what we're at right now). Could this be enabled for the Lollipop update? That would be really cool.
Try it! Shoot some photos at ISO 100 and sharpen on low, and see if that makes it better! Now, if we can reduce the amount of compression we could probably completely fix the camera grain problem! |
