Point 1-3 don't make sense, they don't affect the flashing process. I'd suggest to flash the whole ROM, choosing the 'Firmware Upgrade' method but in that case you'd lose your user data.
You still can try with a PC to phone Windows Tool but if you'll be successful, don't forget to remove the installed malwares after the rooting process has finished. Try with iRoot

iRoot did not work but another 1-click root tool seems to have worked. Kingroot. I've read that some people have had problems with this method but it seems to have worked fine.

Yes, that's quite varied which tool can root which model at the moment. iRoot is generally the most successful at Chinese smartphones but not always, of course.

The only issue i have with Kingroot is whether its sending data from the phone as i have read that it is connected to some server somewhere in the world. But, it's definitely rooted my phone.

I am having the same issue, the software completes but the recovery image never changes.

On 2 of my laptops the software doesn't complete before the Rome disappears from the device manager. Only my desktop was fast enough to complete before disappearing.

On my Asus Nexus7 you flash it from the boot loader, its a lot simpler setup. Any suggestions to stop the Rome disappearing from the device manager.

Hi,

Maybe you need to press and keep pressed the volume-up button while you connect your phone to USB for flashing until the flashing process starts.

Regards,
Bence

The odd thing I noticed was when I hold the + vol key down nothing happens when the phone is off but when I plug the USB in the phone with the + vol key pressed it drops into the bootloader
