This is the SP Flash Tool + OTA release of the
V1.6_20200102 system software
for UMIDIGI A5 Pro
European Version

Flash tool operation is recommended to experienced users only. If you are not yet an experienced flash tool user, please carefully read the flash tool tutorial before proceeding, and strictly follow each instruction.

Except if an authorized or responsible expert directly asked you to do that,
never format the flash chip of your device or you instantly lose your warranty!

UMIDIGI A5 Pro receives all updates automatically via FOTA method. You need this tool only in case of emergency (if you've bricked your phone), if you want to apply a clean install or if you want to clear all root access and custom recovery to make your phone able to receive FOTA updates again. Moreover, flashing with SPFT is the only option to repair (replace) damaged system software.

Changelog:
  • Minor bug fixes and system optimizations

FOTA version: UMIDIGI_A5_Pro.E_V1.6_20200102_20200102-1306

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SP Flash Tool
Resources:

Flashtool tutorial: http://bit.ly/SPFTguide

ROM: >>> UMIDIGI_A5_Pro.E_V1.6_20200102.rar <<<
Extract the .rar file before use. The scatter file (MT6765_Android_scatter.txt) is inside the extracted folder, together with the other components

VCOM driver: Windows 10 can automatically install it. Please make sure that your Windows is logged in with administrator rights and your computer has a working internet connection when first time connecting your phone.

Here's an optional solution to start the flashing process on your UMIDIGI A5 Pro if the standard method doesn't work.
It's especially useful if your phone is bricked or is stuck in bootloop
1. Connect your UMIDIGI A5 Pro to USB.
2. Start the flashing process with the Download button in the flasher app.
3. Press and keep pressed the power button of your phone until the flashing process starts (red bar appears at the bottom of the app window), then release it. In this process you have to keep the power button pressed for about 10 seconds.
4. Wait until the flashing process finishes.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OTA (recovery) update
Manual (local) OTA update method instructions
  • Copy the downloaded .zip file to the internal storage of your phone
  • Go to Settings → System → Advanced → About phone → Wireless update
  • Tap the 3-dot menu button in the top right corner and select Local Updates
  • Brows for the ...update.zip file and select it
  • Select INSTALL NOW, then OK in the Warning window. Your phone reboots into recovery, the update gets installed, then your phone boots into Android. Your updated system is ready to use.

Update file for manual OTA update:
>>> UMIDIGI_A5_Pro.E_V1.6_20200102_20200102-1306_update.zip <<<
It can update version 20191207 only

Optional method (in case if the manual OTA update gets stuck): Install from recovery
You need a microSD card (with at least 4GB capacity) installed in your phone!
  • Copy the ...update.zip file to your SD card.
  • Press and hold the volume-up and power buttons together until your phone restarts in the boot selector mode. It needs about 10 seconds or a little bit less if your phone was already powered off.
  • Here you can move with the vol-up button and select an item with vol-down. Select Recovery.
  • Your phone boots into Recovery and you see a lying android figure with an exclamation mark in red triangle on its tummy + 'No command'.
  • Press and hold the power and vol-up buttons (in this order) together, then release them to call the recovery menu. Now you can move with both volume buttons, and select an item with the power button.
  • Move to ‘Apply update from SD card’ and select it.
  • On the next screen brows for the update file and select it. The updating process will start and needs a few minutes to be finished.
  • After a succcessful installation you can read the ''Install from SD card complete.'' message and the receovery menu is available again.
  • Select 'Reboot system now'. Alternatively you can perform a factory data reset here by choosing 'Wipe data/factory reset'

Kind request from users:
Please report any kind of new issues you experience after installing this update only if you've already flashed this ROM with SP Flash Tool in Firmware Upgrade mode. In rare cases a FOTA update can cause more or less serious malfunctions but that means only the update process went wrong, not a badly developed ROM. An updated stock ROM, especially related to the basic functions will not cause any new issues but will solve some of the existing ones.

Sixth firmware released and still... Spotify crashing when trying to access the context menu (3 dots menu).

Anyway, here is a quick and dirty fix to make it work :
With the adb tool (no root needed), connect to your smartphone and enter the following :
setprop debug.hwui.renderer opengl

This will work until the next reboot. If you want to make it persistent, then Google a little bit (I don't want to be responsible of your smartphone not booting anymore).

Applies to Umidigi A5 Pro for sure, but probably to any other smartphone affected by the issue as well.

I hope they will never update to 10 but instead keep improving 9.

I would like to see a trick to boost wifi stability. It beheaves weird. Like it works fir a few days and than suddenly it becomes very slow. If I turn of bluetooth it seems to fix the problem (most of the the time but not always). But than in cannot use my bt speaker.  It is like the anttentas interfere? Maybe they draw too much power together? Does bluetooth also ahave different channels like wifi has? Maybe I can change some setting via adb?

Also I wonder if I can download an update but instead of installing he update I can just transfer apk's from it? Like the camera app? I am really hoping for a new verson of the camera app that lets me save my pictures to sdcard. Now I have to do that manually every so many days.

I spent weeks getting my phone to work the way I want and I really do not want to update have have to go over all those changes again.

That said, I love this phone. For the money it is really fantastic.

"dropping UI" ? What do you mean ?
The bug I was speaking about is Spotify crashing when trying to ...

what i mean you can see on the photo. System Interface app crashes periodically that causes reload UI (user interface). And it happens when notification from google app comes (or notification from the other app but not always) On 1.4 FW all was ok!
ps i don't use spotify, it is another bug

I can't assess improvements or fixes yet, but everything works. I think it's better with signal reception and battery life.

Hi daiened !

Say which app?
Sometimes it happens to me, it can cause HW load. The application simply does not wait and crashes.

The bug I was speaking about is Spotify crashing when trying to display the contextual menu : long press on a song to see the options, or press on the 3 dots at the top-right of the screen when you are on an album or playlist => Spotify crashes systematically.

That's the only bug my trick is supposed to address. I am not experiencing any other crash with my A5 Pro.

I agree.  Biggest issue I have with the phone is Spotify crashing...with the 3 dot context menu.  Very annoying.  Considering going back to old phone.   Might try your hack.
