This is the SP Flash Tool release of the
V1.3_20190610 system software
for UMIDIGI A3 N Android 9.0
Please flash this ROM only if your phone is shipped with Android 9.0 system. This software is NOT directly compatible with Android 8.1 phones!

Flash tool operation is recommended to experienced users only. If you are not yet an experienced flash tool user, please carefully read the flash tool tutorial before proceeding, and strictly follow each instruction.

Except if an authorized or responsible expert directly asked you to do that,
never format the flash chip of your device or you instantly lose your warranty!

UMIDIGI A3 receives all updates automatically via FOTA method. You need this tool only in case of emergency (if you've bricked your phone), if you want to apply a clean install or if you want to clear all root access and custom recovery to make your phone able to receive FOTA updates again.

Changelog:
First release for manufacturing

FOTA version: UMIDIGI_A3_N_V1.3_20190610_20190610-2224

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SP Flash Tool
Resources:

Flashtool tutorial: http://bit.ly/SPFTguide

Extract the .rar file before use. The scatter file (MT6739_Android_scatter.txt) is inside the extracted folder, together with the other components

VCOM driver: Windows 10 already automatically can install it (if your computer is connected to the internet) or you can use this: MTK_Driver_Auto_Installer_SP_Drivers_20160804.exe

Here's an optional solution to start the flashing process on your UMIDIGI A3 if the standard method doesn't work.
It's especially useful if your phone is bricked or is stuck in bootloop
1. Connect your UMIDIGI A3 to USB.
2. Start the flashing process with the Download button in the flasher app.
3. Press and keep pressed the power button of your phone until the flashing process starts (red bar appears at the bottom of the app window), then release it. In this process you have to keep the power button pressed for about 10 seconds.
4. Wait until the flashing process finishes.

Kind request from users:
Please report any kind of new issues you experience after installing this update only if you've already flashed this ROM with SP Flash Tool in Firmware Upgrade mode. In rare cases a FOTA update can cause more or less serious malfunctions but that means only the update process went wrong, not a badly developed ROM. An updated stock ROM, especially related to the basic functions will not cause any new issues but will solve some of the existing ones.

Hi, Ben

When you say "This software is NOT directly compatible with Android 8.1 phones!" you mean there is an "indirect" way to flash 8.1 phones?

Are we facing a new generation of A3 devices? If so, flashing this ROM Android 9 on old phones with 8.1 could lead to a phone brick? People buying this phone now will have Android 9 but prior phones are not upgradable? This seems not fair.

I would like to upgrade my A3 with 8.1 but I'm afraid to do that without more information from you. So, please say something about this.

Thank you very much.

Hi FR8146,

Simply saying, the hardware is compatible but the software is not. The Android 9.0 release has a different partition structure, so if you want to upgrade your phone, you have to format its flash memory, then rewrite the whole partition structure that needs to use some additional tools beside SPFT. The required steps would be the followings:

1. Flash a 9.0 ROM in 'format all + download' mode with SPFT - Now you've lost your fingerprint sensor and google key that makes your phone useless. Your warranty is voided as well.
2. Generate a request file for generating a unique(!) activation file for your phone. Further info HERE but you need a different tool
3. Flash the activation file.
4. Flash the phone model compatible attestation key (Google key). That's not a unique file and the same version can be used on both the A3 and A3 Pro. Further info HERE but again, a different tool is needed.

So step 2 is the problem since that needs to generate a unique file for each phone one by one by our engineer, using a special hardware tool. You can't do it yourself, and (currently) we can't offer a general solution that works on any phone.

Hello. There is a full backup of Android 8.1 firmware created by SP Flash Tool.
Can I install android 9 and restore the fingerprint sensor and google key from this backup?
Will these keys go from 8.1 to 9?

Upgrading an 8.1 phone to 9.0 is not easy but possible. The solution will be posted in the Utility section soon. Was it described like this, but did you decide that you did not correct it?

Hi Ben

Thank you for your very clear explanation.
So, the problem is android itself and its partitions.
We must wait for a solution, otherwise it will be very unfair for those of us that have an 8.1 phone and would like to upgrade.
Afterall, other brandas (Xiaomi, Samsung, Huaway,...) have allready done it without problems (afaik) so, I think it must not be very dificult. Maybe it is only a matter of having time to do it.

Thank you again.

There was some misunderstanding between me and our engineer for a short time (since she can speak Chinese only, so we need to use translator), and finally it turned out, there's no general solution that works on all phones but all upgraded phones need to get their fingerprint activation one by one with our engineer's assistance. See step 2. in comment #3.
I'll publish an upgrade tutorial later but possibly the fingerprint activation will be a paid service.
I'd like to remember all Android 8.1 users who think that, they've already paid for their phones: you paid for an entry level (one of the cheapest devices on the market) Android 8.1 phone without the promise of an Android version upgrade. You can not mention a single example of an Android phone in the same price range that has ever received an Android version upgrade.
