Yes, this happens with the official AND unofficial basic ROM. Gmail (and whatsapp for me and sometimes facebook) gets cleaned in background whatever settings you have: whitelist, permissions, startup, battery etc. etc. I have not found a solution. I think it is actually a problem with Nougat, android 7 - there are several competing 'cleaning' apps to save battery and they are causing bugs in the system.
