I received my Umi Iron a few weeks ago, and I have really enjoyed it so far. I loaded Iron v1.6 on it, and have observed some bugs and have some suggestions.
Bugs
- Difficulty with WiFi and USB Tethering
When trying to connect a computer or tablet to the phone using Android's built-in tethering, it takes a very long time to assign an IP address to the connecting device. Once connected, no data is sent to the connected device. - Camera doesn't focus on "Infinity" in autofocus modes
When taking distance pictures in any autofocus mode, items in the distance are slightly blurry. When installing a camera that explicitly supports "infinity" fixed focus mode, items are sharp. This suggests that it is a bug in the camera driver, not a hardware defect. - Backlight flickers in low light when using Adaptive Brightness
When using Adaptive Brightness, with the setting on low and in low-light conditions, the backlight rapidly flickers and occasionally turns off. - Audio has high latency
There is a delay, sometimes several seconds, in the audio playback. When playing back short amounts of audio, such as during navigation, often the last second or two of audio is cut off.
Suggestions
- Camera should have reduced noise reduction at high ISO
The camera is capable of capturing better images, but details are removed by overly aggressive noise reduction when shooting at higher ISO settings.
I suggest reducing the amount of noise reduction applied to higher ISO images. - Either remove "End All" from the notifications shade, instead show it as a "Sweep" icon in the task switcher.
It's not very useful to end tasks, but it's often nice to clear out your "Recents" list in the task switcher. I suggest removing the icon from the settings shade, and instead add a "Sweep" icon in the task switcher that would remove all the "Recents" icons and ends the tasks. - Add an alternate ROM or radio patch with different bands
Although the phone supports LTE, the enabled bands don't match carriers in the United States. I live in the United States, and I'm sure there are other Iron owners who do or who might visit the United States. My research indicates that the MediaTek radio in the Iron is able to use the same bands, but they are not enabled in the radio firmware. I suggest providing an alterate ROM that has firmware to switch the bands to match US LTE providers.
T-Mobile operates: Band 2 (1900 MHz PCS), Band 4 (1700/2100 MHz AWS), Band 12 (700 MHz Block A)
AT&T operates: Band 2 (1900 MHz), Band 4 (1700 MHz), Band 17 (700 MHz)
It would be well worth it to me to take the time to flash a US version of a ROM or load an alternate radio patch in order to use these bands. - Work towards Android 6.0 Marshmallow
Although the Iron has 3 GB of RAM, Lollipop is still a relatively buggy version of Android. Please release a Marshmallow build for the Iron!
Thank you for making such a great phone! I look forward to the next software release!
