You never need to format the NVRAM partition. Why do you want to do that?

Unless you have manually installed an incompatible driver on your Windows, you never need such a workaround. A freshly installed Windows 10 connected to the internet can automatically install the correct, working drivers after connecting your powered off phone to USB. Even if you have incompatible drivers installed, that's simpler to just remove them, then let your Windows automatically install the correct ones. What you shared is an old post from 2015, that solution does not make sense anymore.

Hi there new to this thread but I had a few issues like others but seemed to fix by only using USB 2 ports not USB 3 and with the s2 lite I had to hold the volume up button once I connectedy powered down device

Hi,
Personally I flash my phones every day using USB 3 ports but if your motherboard has a non-native USB 3 controller (external device on the motherboard, not integrated in the south bridge), its third party drivers may cause issues. You don't need to press any button to start the flashing process if your phone is completely powered off.

\n\nI'm running into exactly the same problem, SN writer boots the phone into META mode, then stops doing anything. disconnecting and reconnecting usb does nothing. I'm going to try a different pc (laptop) now to see if that helps.
EDIT: Solution!!!

AS SOON AS the SN Writer tool switches from "Start searching preloader -" to "Start searching kernel-" REMOVE usb cord, and then after 2 seconds, connect again!
If you remove too slow, the SN Writer tool will not reconnect and continue!

Few questions on recovery Z2.
With SN_Writer_Tool everything almost restored on Z2 with IMEI, Bluetooth and WiFi all back to normal except how do I fix the following:

1.  Tiny red "Unactive" in right upper corner of screen?    Does this relate to fingerprint reader?
2.  Serial number changed.   I wrote down original serial number and would like to restore.   How do I restore or flash original Z2 serial number?   
3.  Does HCDP/DRM keys need to be restored?   Instructions?

I am having the same issue
I am using windows 10 Laptop. I have downloaded MTK_Driver_Auto_Installer_SP_Drivers_20160804

I have powered OFF the phone and each time i connect the issue I could see MediaTek PreLoader USB VCOM it will only stay for 2 second
then it despair

when I tried to run the software SN WRITE to write EMEI it give me error

basically it dose not detect USB
